What to Expect During Your FUE Hair Transplant Procedure
Undergoing a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is a safe and minimally invasive process. Here’s a step-by-step overview of what you can expect on the day of your procedure:
Arrival and Preparation
- You’ll be welcomed by our staff and guided through final paperwork and consent forms.
- Pre-operative photos will be taken for your medical record.
- We will review your donor and recipient areas
- The frontal hair line will be drawn on your forehead.
Local Anesthesia
- Local anesthesia will be administered to numb the donor and recipient areas of your
scalp. - Oral sedation will be given
Shaving
- The back and sides of your scalp (donor area) will be shaved to allow easy extraction of individual follicular units.
- For anyone getting more than 2000 or more grafts the entire head will be shaved
- For those getting under 2000 grafts, we recommend keeping you top hair “longer” so
that your new grafts can be hidden by your pre-existing hair
Follicle Extraction
- Using a tiny punch (typically 0.7 to 1.0 mm), the surgeon will extract individual
follicular units one by one. - This process can take several hours, depending on the number of grafts needed.
Graft Preparation
- Each extracted follicle is examined and sorted under a microscope by trained
technicians. - The grafts are kept in a specialized solution to preserve their vitality.
Recipient Site Creation
- The doctor will create tiny incisions in the recipient (bald or thinning) area using fine instruments.
- The placement angle, direction, and density are carefully designed for natural-looking
results.
Graft Placement
- The individual hair grafts are gently inserted into the recipient sites.
- This part of the process is meticulous and may take a few hours depending on the number of grafts.
Completion and Post-Care Instructions
- Once all grafts are placed, the team will clean your scalp and apply any necessary
dressings. - You’ll be given detailed post-operative instructions and medications (such as antibiotics
or pain relievers, if needed). - A light hat may be provided to protect the area when you leave.
Total Time
- Most FUE procedures last 6 to 8 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the case.
- You will have breaks for food, rest, and bathroom as needed.
